Tormis Remixed
ALBUM LAUNCH / 1st OCTOBER 19.00-20.00 / VON KRAHL
Ulmeplaadid presents a new album „Laulu jäävuse seadus (Redaktsioon 2009)” that features remixes of Veljo Tormis’ works from 1950-1991.
Multi-processed runic melodies are used on the album which reflect today’s environment even more adequately than traditional music. The idea to combine academic and non-academic music was born during the 2007 Estonian Music Days where artists were given the opportunity to create new music using Tormis’ creation. Many of the musicians lacked any experience working with choir or traditional music and in some cases such “innocence” produced very unique synthesis. The album „Laulu jäävuse seadus“ features Tõnis Leemets, Kirtana Rasa, Marsen Jules (GER), Kadi Uibo, Taavi Tulev, Pastacas, Muschraum, Uku Nurk, Eva Mitreikina, Aivar Tõnso, 3 Pead, Pia Fraus, Jaan Pehk, Algorütmid and others.
Veljo Tormis (EST)
Veljo Tormis belongs to the same generation of composers as Arvo Pärt, Eino Tamberg, Jaan Rääts, Kuldar Sink and others who started in the 1950s with neoclassical music and in the 1960s experimented with modern compositions. Although Tormis has written orchestral and chamber music as well as stage pieces, the majority of his work consists of vocal music, especially choir music based on runic melodies mixed with modern composition techniques. In addition to Estonian folk songs Tormis has also taken notice of many vanishing peoples and preserved their language. Thanks to him we can hear Ingrian, Veps, Livonian and other languages frequently on concert stages around the world today.
